Over the past months, The Fidget Project CIC has been actively working across South Devon to support children with Sensory Processing Differences (SPD) and their families through hands-on community engagement, school partnerships, and local events.
Our work is grounded in one simple belief: support should be practical, local, and accessible.
Meeting Families Where They Are
We’ve been out in the community hosting stalls outside Co-op stores in Salcombe, Modbury, and Dartmouth, where families could explore sensory tools and learn more about how they support regulation, focus, and emotional wellbeing.
These conversations are often the first time many parents hear the term sensory processing differences—and for some, it is a moment of recognition and relief.
We also work with families across Loddiswell, Aveton Gifford, Stokenham, Modbury, Buckfastleigh and surrounding villages through school-based and community sessions.
Creative Spaces That Build Understanding
We believe learning doesn’t only happen in formal settings.
At Jules’ The Yard Maker Creative Space, we met home-educated children and families to explore sensory needs in a relaxed, welcoming environment. These sessions help parents better understand how sensory differences show up in everyday behaviour.
We also collaborated with artist Sam Meghawry from Little Star Studio to run creative workshops where children and parents made “emotional monsters”—a playful way to explore big feelings safely through art and imagination.
These sessions highlight the importance of creativity in emotional regulation and communication.
Building Confidence in Everyday Environments
One of our key goals is to help children feel more comfortable in real-world settings.
We are proud to work in partnership with Quay Dental Surgery in Kingsbridge to offer free oral hygiene sessions for children who experience anxiety or sensory challenges in clinical environments.
For many neurodiverse children, dental visits can feel overwhelming due to sensory overload. By creating a calm, non-clinical space, children are supported to explore tools and routines at their own pace, with gentle guidance from professionals.
Schools and Local Engagement
We continue to work closely with schools across the South Hams, delivering sessions that help staff better understand sensory processing differences and how they impact learning and behaviour.
We are also developing early-stage work with schools to improve inclusion and classroom support strategies.
Staying Connected
Alongside these activities, we regularly attend and host community events including:
- Kingsbridge Hub support sessions
- Local school fairs and awareness events
- Seasonal community gatherings
These spaces allow families to connect, ask questions, and feel part of a wider supportive network.
Everything we do is shaped by the families we meet and every conversation helps us refine and expand our work.
