Making Everyday Spaces More Accessible for Neurodiverse Children

For many children with Sensory Processing Differences, everyday environments such as dental surgeries, GP clinics, and healthcare settings can feel overwhelming.

Noise, lighting, unfamiliar routines, and sensory input can quickly lead to anxiety, distress, or shutdown. This often results in avoidance of essential healthcare.

At The Fidget Project CIC, we are working to change this.

Supporting Children in Clinical Environments

We are partnering with Quay Dental Surgery in Kingsbridge to offer free oral hygiene sessions designed specifically for children who experience sensory-related anxiety or difficulties in clinical settings.

These sessions take place in a calm, supportive environment where children can:

  • Explore sensory tools at their own pace
  • Familiarise themselves with dental routines gradually
  • Build confidence in a non-threatening space
  • Experience positive, low-pressure interactions with healthcare professionals

Why This Matters

Many neurodiverse children avoid or struggle with routine healthcare appointments due to sensory overload or anxiety.

By adapting environments and approaches, we can make healthcare more accessible and reduce distress for children and families.

This approach supports:

  • Earlier intervention and prevention
  • Reduced anxiety around healthcare
  • Better long-term health outcomes
  • Increased trust in medical environments

A Model for Wider Change

Our work with Quay Dental is part of a wider vision to encourage sensory-aware practices in healthcare settings.

We hope to expand this model so that more clinics, dentists, and healthcare providers can offer similar adaptations.

Small changes in environment and approach can make a significant difference to a child’s experience.
